Assignment 1: Project management

Due: Wed Sept 29 in class.

As the head chef at Junior’s Restaurant, you created the following list of tasks needed to make an onion omelette:
  1. Beat eggs (takes 1 minute)
  2. Rinse vegetables (takes 2 min)
  3. Chop parsley (takes 1 min, depends on task 2)
  4. Chop onions (takes 2 min, depends on 2)
  5. Cook eggs and onions in pan (takes 3 min, depends on 1 and 4)
  6. Fold omelette in half, cook (takes 1 minute, depends on 5)
  7. Arrange on plate, garnish with parsley (takes 1 minute, depends on 3 and 6)
  8. Clean pan and utensils (takes 3 minutes, depends on 6)
Answer all of the following questions.

  1. Draw a dependency graph to represent this project.

  2. Assuming your kitchen is fully staffed (as many cooks as you could possibly need), how long will it take to prepare the omelette and clean up afterwards?

  3. What is the critical path?

  4. One of the cooks in your kitchen is new on the job. Which tasks would you assign him to ensure that he doesn't hold things up?

  5. If you are short-staffed and need to do all these tasks yourself (one at a time), then how long will it take?
